My Rating – 4 Stars

Let me just say that while I did enjoy Cinder, I liked Scarlet so much more!

Scarlet is looking for her grandmother. Michelle Benoit has been missing for eighteen days; the police have stopped searching for her and Scarlet is desperate to find her. During a delivery that Scarlet is making to a restaurant, she runs into Wolf, a big hunk of gorgeous with a side of scary. She kind of blows him off, more worried about finding her grandmother.

When she returns to the farm she helps her grandmother run, she finds her drunk of a father (whom she hasn’t seen in five years) rummaging through the house. He’s frantic, claiming he’s searching for something Michelle hid. Scarlet notices that he’s been tortured, and he tells her that the same people that tortured him have her grandmother. They want something she has. He father describes a tattoo on his captor’s arms that were similar to the one she spied on Wolf’s arm and she tracks him down. It’s not until he shows up on her doorstep that she learns a specific group took her grandmother and Wolf agrees to help her.

Meanwhile, after learning exactly what she is, Cinder is attempting to escape New Beijing Prison. In order to keep Luna from declaring war against the Earth, Emperor Kai must hand over Cinder to Queen Levana for execution. She has to find Dr. Erland; he’s the only one that can help her. Decked out with the new hand and foot Dr. Erland smuggled into the prison she is able to break out of her cell, but accidently lands in another’s cell, Thorne. Cinder is able to convince him to help and he tells her he has a spaceship hidden. Together they escape and pretty much cause the beginning of the war between Earth and Luna. Cinder needs help, but doesn’t know how to locate Dr. Erland. The only thing she’s got to go on is the name Michelle Benoit.

This book was packed with action. Which was definitely better than the first book, which I felt dragged a bit. I felt I liked Scarlet much better, independent and kind of fierce (She IS a redhead after all). She knows how to pilot a spaceship and fight for herself. And then there’s Wolf *fans self* who is all sorts of mysterious and hot.

Prince Kai is featured again, although I kind of understand him, (last book he was mourning his father’s death and worried he wouldn’t be able to lead his Empire, this book he’s feeling like he was manipulated and tricked and dealing with impending destruction of his Empire) I just don’t really like him as a possible love interest for Cinder. He’s got the spine of a wet noodle. He’s just a bit blah to me.
Cinder spend a great deal of this book learning her gifts and dealing with what it’s like to be what she is, which I did and didn’t like. The book switches from Scarlet to Cinder and while it was nice to see Cinder grow and develop, I would have liked a bit more Scarlet.

There are two more books I the series Cress (Rapunzel) and Winter (Snow White) and I can’t wait! Finally a fairy tale retelling that lives up to the hype!
