Ah. Another fairy tale retelling.

Tiger Lily lives on Neverland. She was found as a baby under a tiger lily by a village shaman, a transgendered man named Tik Tok. He takes her in a raises has as his own. Her tribe, the Sky Eaters, believe she is cursed by crows. Once when Tiger Lily was a child, a group of children trapped her in a giant pot full of turkey broth to die, she was saved by chance but sometime later the leader of the bullies was found dead with a crow by her side. After that Tiger Lily always wears a crow feather in her head.

She is a bit of an outcast in her village. She can run, hunt, and fight as well as the boys and often surpasses their skills which outcasts her from them. She runs free and unmarried which also outcasts her from the women. She only has two real friends, Pine Sap and Moon Eye.

Tiger Lily is wild but quiet. She holds her heart close. She likes to take up “lost causes” as Tik Tok calls them. Tinker Bell follows her everywhere. (Oh btw the whole book is written in Tink’s POV).

Peter Pan is not a native of Neverland. Neither are the Lost Boys. The pirates hunt the Pan and the Lost boys and Tiger Lily meets him after an encounter with the pirates. Pan is nothing like the cartoon, he is kind of a dick and totally down with murdering the pirates.

Tiger Lily and Pan’s relationship is awkward and slow. In fact, it’s a bit boring. This book hardly kept my attention. It’s not written badly, in fact the words are beautiful, but it wasn’t captivating.

Contrary to the summary, enemies are not trying to tear them apart, however Tiger Lily is promised to another. Wendy does come along but it’s pretty much after Tiger Lily has already made her decision. Wendy’s arrival just cements it. Oh and fucking Wendy, man, be prepared to dislike her.

All the characters you love from the Peter Pan movie are there but more…primitive. Hook, Smee, the ticking crocodile. If I didn’t already love Tinker Bell, then I would have falling in love with her after this book. One interesting thing is you see Tink falling in love with Peter and why she gets so jealous of Wendy.

So, it was an interesting plot and the characters were great but the execution was just blah.
