My Rating – 4 1/2 of 5 stars

Silver Shadows is the 5th book in the Bloodlines series, this review will contain spoilers for the previous books.

If you read The Fiery Heart, you know it ends with Sydney being hauled away by the Alchemists because of her relationship with Adrian. Silver Shadows starts with Sydney alone in a dark cell. She has been sent to reeducation, which is basically physical, emotional, and psychological torture. The point of reeducation is basically to break the will of the person and force them to blindly follow the ways of the Alchemists.

Well luckily for Sydney, she is smarter than average and also has her magical abilities to thank for helping her stay sane. She fights every step. Her love for Adrian keeps her going. She even tries to help the others inside.

Adrian on the other hand, well…he’s Adrian. Typical Adrian that drowns his sorrow in booze and self-pity. He makes stupid decisions and he uses spirit in ways that he shouldn’t. He ends up back at Moroi court (not going to tell you WHY he is at court, that’s a spoiler. And not one that necessarily makes sense in my mind but whatever) and falls into his old habits.

There are brief appearances from Lissa, Rose, and Dimitri, and the gang in California. I wish there had been more side character face time. I really love those guys. Marcus Finch was a bigger part of this book and he was actually very helpful.

I can’t tell you anything else! A lot of major stuff happens in this book and about halfway through its just spoiler after spoiler. But there are tons and tons of Sydrian feelings!

The only issues I had were small (the spoiler I mentioned earlier) and the pacing seemed a bit off. Slow in the beginning and then it really becomes fast pace during the second half. And it was a little too short; it seemed a bit obvious that it was shortened to make the series into 6 books.

However the book is definitely not a disappointment and if you’ve loved the other Bloodlines book, you’ll love this one too!
