In college, she and her four best friends came up with the system as a way to keep away the good-looking bastards that might worm their way past their carefully constructed walls. Seven years later, three of her friends have succumbed to their last Code Reds and are happily married. Now it’s just Nicole and her closest friend, Jen, who are still on their own, and Nic is just fine with that.
That is, until Joshua Daniels is transferred to Nicole’s office from New York and assigned to work with her on a special project. He’s everything she’s avoided and everything she claims she doesn’t want, so why can’t she get him out of her mind? He’s persistent, dangerously handsome, and sexy as sin. In other words, he’s her worst nightmare. She turns to her friends to help her resist Josh’s considerable charms and the inescapable draw she feels every time she gets near him. Can the Code Red save her this time, or will Josh send her perfectly balanced life into chaos?

Read a Excerpt from Code Red –
I jumped. The voice behind me was smooth and masculine and
unfamiliar. Across from me, Angela’s eyes widened and her mouth dropped
open. Oh, shit. It was the Suit. Had to be.
I turned slowly and the first thing I saw was a watch. An expensive looking
watch. A Rolex, or a very good knockoff. Next was a crisp, white
shirt and a black jacket that stretched over what appeared to be a rather
broad chest, upon which sat his burgundy tie. Finally, there was a very
amused pair of bright blue eyes and a killer smile.

My Review –
*I received an advanced digital copy of this novel from Netgalley on behalf of The Writer’s Coffee Shop*
Nicole had an absolutely gorgeous Greek god of a boyfriend in college. Seriously, he had a Greek ancient and everything. However, he was sharing his awesome Greek bod with half the females in Nic’s dorm. Boo hiss. So Nic and her friends devised a system, the Code Red; which is a system that keeps dangerous guys out. A friend calls a Code Red and the other friends come running to help her so some panty-dropping hot guy won’t worm his way into her heart and break it.
Skip ahead a few years, where Nic and her friends are adults. Nicole leads a pretty simple life. She has a good job, has two cats (I loved the cats) and is so addicted to Supernatural that even her best friend is forbidden to call her the night that it airs (also, where the name Winchester for her cat comes from). She has managed to not get her heart broken again since college. She sticks to one night stands with so/so guys that have no chance of really winning her heart. It works for her.
Until one day when she’s at work, in the middle of emailing her friend a list a reasons why her vibrator, BOB is better than a boyfriend and in walks Josh. Josh easily puts the Greek dude to shame (personally I was picturing a blue-eye Alcide from True Blood, however the author said she was going more for a Matt Bomer look. Either way *homer simpson drool*) Josh is from the NY office and he’s going to be working on a special project with Nic that includes them sharing an office. He’s also smart and funny and nice and not at all what you would expect from a guy who is so flippin’ smokin’.
Nic immediately fires off a Code Red to her friends. These friends however, think Nicole needs to get over her hang ups and just go for it already! Damn! Does she listen? Of course not. She goes to great lengths to avoid letting him in.
I have to admit, I was out of my element reading this book because it’s a simple adult romance and that’s not really my genre. Any romance I read usually involves people with supernatural abilities and bad guys that may or may not murder you, zombies or a post-apocalyptic world where you have to fight for your life. I was also a little hesitant because I consider the author a friend and omg was she going to hate me if I didn’t like the book?!?!
But I didn’t hate the book, so yay! I actually really enjoyed it. Mostly because I could relate. A girl that’s been cheated on and hides her heart? Check. Some awesome friends that toss around witty banter? Check. A girl that can hold conversations with her cats and would forego a night out for a TV show? Double check.
At twenty-six Nicole is kind of immature but then again age is no indication of emotional maturity and when you’ve spent a good chunk of your life avoiding serious relationships, how the hell are you supposed to know how to handle them?
Overall I have to stay it’s a good book. I liked it though it wasn’t my usual style and even though I kind of figured how it would end, I still enjoyed the ride. If romance that doesn’t include otherworldy creatures is your thing, then yes check this book out. Even if this isn’t your type of thing, I’d say at least give it a shot.
